Award-winning British-Nigerian singer-songwriter and musician Ego Ella May reveals “What We Do”, the first single to be taken from her forthcoming, highly anticipated sophomore album, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2020 debut “Honey For Wounds”, due for release in early 2026. Co-produced with South London vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Wu-Lu, “What We Do” is an up-beat groove with soulful undertones, radiating lightness and freedom creating an undeniable feel-good banger.
Speaking about the new single, Ego Ella May explains: “This song came about when I first intentionally started making this album. I was away with my band at Real World Studios in Bath; such a lovely space to write and commune with my team, but I was desperately missing my partner! So I wrote about how excited I was to be reunited with him! It’s such a groovy, fun song and I don’t usually get the chance to write those, so I wanted the subject matter to be light and reflect the feel of the music. I made this song with Wu-Lu, who also sings a little at the end of the track (a blessing!), and for those who are familiar with Wu-Lu’s work, you’ll know this is so distinctively him and I love it even more so for that reason, and for him opening me up to make such a banger like this! I didn’t think I was even capable of it! It’s got this carefree, fun, riding-with-the-top-down type energy, and I love it so much!”
Ego Ella May channels genre-blending R&B and neo-soul with a deep respect for jazz. Her debut album, Honey For Wounds, fused soul-tingling jazz, R&B and neo-soul with honest and personal observations about self-healing, protest, love and loss. To mark five years since its release, Ego Ella May recently unveiled a very limited anniversary edition of the LP. Honey For Wounds – 5 Year Anniversary Edition is available to buy via Bandcamp.
In 2024, Ego Ella May made her Canadian live debut, playing the main stage of the Montreal Jazz Festival, and sold out her debut headline show at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in London. She was nominated in the Best Jazz Act category for the 2025 MOBO Awards.
