JON ONABOWU DROPS NEW SINGLE
‘WHEN THE LIGHT FINDS US’

10 APR 2026: Jon Onabowu, the British-Nigerian drummer, composer and bandleader has unveiled his new single ‘When The Light Finds Us’.

Evoking a carefree, almost childlike openness, ‘When The Light Finds Us’ is a track centering that bespoke moment of spiritual and emotional clarity where everything suddenly aligns and forward motion towards a pre-ordained path feels inevitable.

Sonically shaped by shimmering synth-driven textures that draw on the groove and sheen of 1980s Brit-funk as well as the melodic instincts of Lyle Mays, the track pulls double duty balancing groove and the sophisticated depth of jazz-rooted musicianship.

Radiating a sense of warm and optimism, the track gradually unfolds through fluid key changes and harmonic experimentation by way of Onabowu’s chemistry with acclaimed musicians Anatole Muster (Louis Cole, Jamie Cullum) and Marcus Miller protégé Brandon Rose.

Speaking on the song’s inspiration, Jon said: “The title took years to find, but when it arrived it felt right. During a writing session at Anatole Muster’s home, we landed on a beautiful melody and played around with modulations that gave the track its distinctive warmth”

‘When The Light Finds Us’ follows the release of Onabowu’s previous single ‘The Bounce’ featuring David Mrakpor of Blue Lab Beats. Upon its release, the track amassed over 20k streams within its first week. Additionally earning critical plaudits from Official Charts, The Voice Newspaper, Rough Trade, Babystep Magazine and The Urban Music Scene. Elsewhere the tracks’ initial buzz parlayed into Onabowu being featured as the cover star on Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds Jazz’ playlist.

‘When The Light Finds Us’ and ‘The Bounce’ comes after many years of Onabowu nurturing his talents alongside internationally acclaimed artists in collaborative, improvisation-driven settings. He has performed with renowned figures such as Venna and Theo Croker across a range of stages and festivals, including the former’s first European tour, North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Cross The Tracks, EFG London Jazz Festival and Recessland.

Additionally, as the drummer for The Balimaya Project, Onabowu has also contributed to high-profile cross-disciplinary projects, such as a London Fashion Week collaboration with Labrum, Adidas, and Abbey Road Studios.
