HEPnotic (Hep is the new Hip) – 100 years of Cool
A Centennial Tribute to Robert Garfield Baldwin, Sr
Composed and Produced by Bob Baldwin
This song is more than a groove. It’s a centennial vibration.
A sonic nod to his father, Robert Garfield Baldwin, Sr. (1926-2006), who would’ve turned 100 this year.
Quotes Baldwin:
“Dad was the original “hep cat” in my life — a man of style, music, math, depth, and quiet rhythm. Through God’s grace, the legacy he carried flows through me. Case in point: The cover is from a 1953 ‘selfie’ when he was 27. Pop was way ahead of his time. Every note on this track is layered with his DNA — the humor, the timing, the swing, the cool that never fades. This is his groove — re-imagined, reborn, and released through my hands in this generation.”
Baldwin leans into an intimate jazz-trio aesthetic, channeling the cool sophistication of New York’s downtown jazz scene. Featuring West Coast bass virtuoso Brian Bromberg on upright, the groove is anchored by the always-inventive Donnell Spencer, with bold, expressive horn lines from Barry Danielian, longtime sideman to Bruce Springsteen. Together, the ensemble delivers a hip, stripped-down set that feels timeless yet unmistakably now.
100 years later, Hep is still the new Hip.
And cool still runs in the family.
Later this year: The full Baldwin studio album (#38) is scheduled for release later this year with a little help from Azymuth, Toninho Horta, and more.
