For LAWRENCE UDEiGWE (known professionally as UDEiGWE [oo-dee-gway]), an aesthetic sensibility and mathematical rigor are two sides of the same coin. Udeigwe is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of Integrative Programs at Manhattan University and a Research Affiliate in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). But he is also a pianist, vocalist, and composer with two previous albums under his own name Live in Williamsburg (2026) and Rhythm Sustained (2018). Music on the Rox said, “Live in Williamsburg isn’t just another live album; it’s a musical document that captures Udeigwe at a moment where creative intuition and uninterrupted performance align. For jazz lovers and fans of dynamic musicianship, this set is both refreshing and deeply engaging.”
His newest album, FOUR LEMMAS, continues to draw from his life experiences, mathematical discipline, and a deep engagement with ideas about how perception is expressed through music and art.
A member of the Igbo tribe, Udeigwe was born Nigeria and grew up in a town called Makurdi in the central part of the country. The town had just one television station that did not start until 4pm, and one FM radio station that played a lot of American music. Udeigwe says, “There wasn’t a lot going on there, but the advantage of that is you don’t have a lot of distractions.”
Although he loved music, his parents had other ideas for him. He relates, “I really wanted to study music and theater, but I had always been very strong in math, so my parents encouraged me to pursue that path. Along the way, I also studied computer science. After college, I wanted to move to New York to explore music and theater more seriously, but that route would have been difficult as an international student. Since it was easier to remain in the country on a student visa, I decided to go to graduate school in mathematics instead.” Udeigwe received a B.S. and B.A. from Duquesne University, an M.S. from University of Delaware, and an M.A. and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, all while studying the piano and singing.
After completing his graduate work, Udeigwe secured a position teaching at Manhattan University, where he would lead classes in the morning, do research in the afternoon, and go to jam sessions at night. He was soon booking his own gigs around New York and the Northeast.
Udeigwe has an amazing ability to bridge disciplines, translating mathematical and scientific ideas into musical forms. Although the math and science that inspire his creativity is abstruse, the music he composes is not. The music on FOUR LEMMAS is warm and inviting.
Joining Udeigwe are some top East Coast musicians, including STEPH CLEMENT (trumpet & arrangements), Grammy-nominated WAYNE TUCKER (trumpet & arrangements), JOSH GREEN (drums), and RADE BEMA (bass).
At its core, the album is an examination of Udeigwe’s identity as a scientist and an artist. In mathematics, a lemma is a statement that supports a larger concept. Udeigwe took that idea as a starting point and composed an eight-track suite based on mathematical concepts. But he does not try to translate mathematics into sound; rather, he creates impressionistic, meditative pieces that convey the feelings and moods shaped by those abstract concepts. Udeigwe began the project by writing down his thoughts in poetry, which became the album’s lyrics and shaped the concept of the album. The spare music is influenced by African rhythms and sonority with a heavy dose of funk. Avoiding pyrotechnics, Udeigwe emphasizes phrasing, space, and band dynamics, giving the musicians ample space to improvise. His singing voice is light and airy, and he mixes singing with poetic narration.
Udeigwe structured the music with a lemma that states an abstract idea about identity and art, followed by a corollary that expands on the concept. He opens the album with a “Prologue” that sets the conceptual tone – “Now I know my lines are drawn, / and I see what’s meant for me. / I can feel the proof is strong— building, binding, building, binding.”
Udeigwe calls the first Lemma “Orthogonality,” which describes a system where components do not directly influence or interact with each other. The corollary is “Independence without isolation,” or as he says in the lyrics, “The zero between us is not emptiness. / It is breathing room. / A sacred distance that lets us stay whole.”
The second Lemma is called “Sparse Matrix,” and its corollary is “Reduction without loss of meaning.” A matrix is a table of numbers arranged in rows and columns. In a sparse matrix, many of the rows have zeroes. Udeigwe explains, “So how does this apply to our lives? It applies to all the clutter of information we have in our brains. Certain things are just not useful, and when you declutter them, you are able to keep moving in the direction that you’re supposed to move. You’re able to say no to certain things.”
The third Lemma is “Local Maximum” with the corollary “Not mistaking a peak for completion.” Udeigwe explains, “When you look at a graph, for example a graph of the stock market, you’re always looking for a trend. So, in life, things get better and better, your graph might be growing, and sometimes you think you are at the peak, but don’t be carried away by the illusion of being at the top. You know, you still have ways to go.”
The last Lemma, titled “Stable Equilibrium,” is about the concept of self-actualization, which usually comes with age. “Stable equilibrium comes with knowing yourself and being able to return to who you are supposed to be no matter the difficulties you encounter,” explains Udeigwe.
Udeigwe’s introspective lyrics are pure poetry, and the music is atmospheric and alluring, drawing you in to a mysterious world where ideas take the shape of music. Lawrence Udeigwe shows us on FOUR LEMMAS that art, science, and math are deeply interconnected. Each provides a pathway to one’s place in the world.
FOUR LEMMAS was released on all streaming platforms on May 1, 2026.
