José James has announced a June 10 release date for his new album, While You Were Sleeping, his fifth studio album and his second album for Blue Note Records. While You Were Sleeping is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed R&B and jazz steeped No Beginning No End, and signals a new creative direction for the versatile singer-songwriter. The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, and was produced by José and Brian Bender.

Acclaimed pianist Jason Moran has announced a September 16 release date for All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller, a collaboration with the vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello that recasts the music of the legendary jazz entertainer Fats Waller as a modern dance party. The album—which was produced by Ndegeocello and Blue Note Records president Don Was—is the ninth in a formidable catalog that Moran has been building on Blue Note since 1999.

Herbie Hancock — the man behind International Jazz Day (April 30) as UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialog and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz – is being honored for his Lifetime Achievement in Jazz. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Hancock’s frequent collaborator, has been voted Musician of the Year.
