“City Of Angels”
Greg Manning is a Swiss-American pianist, composer, producer, and music director renowned for blending jazz, soul, and funk into contemporary smooth jazz. A Berklee College of Music alumnus, he was born in Nigeria and raised in Switzerland before moving to Los Angeles in 2002.
Exposed to jazz by his parents, he started playing piano at age 12 after hearing Stevie Wonder. In Europe, he became a three-time platinum producer for Universal Music Switzerland with multiple chart-toppers starting in 1996. He later served as keyboardist and music director for Jonathan Butler and performed with artists including Gerald Albright, Will Downing, Kirk Whalum, and others during a decade of international touring.
Shifting focus to studio work, Manning has released several solo albums, such as Sugar & Spice (2016), whose title track hit #5 on Billboard, Between the Sun and the Moon (2022), and A Song for Peace (2023), featuring guests like Kirk Whalum. His singles include Billboard #1 hits “Jolanda” (earlier this year), “Top Down” (2019 Song of the Year) and “Sunrise Blvd,” along with a fresh 2025 take on Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time.”
A two-time Grammy-recognized artist, he has produced, written, or mixed numerous Billboard #1 tracks for artists like Jeff Ryan, Cindy Bradley, and Paula Atherton.
“I felt like it was time to explore my funky side with an original composition called “City of Angels”. Initially, I only played piano on it, but over time, I sensed that a Rhodes electric piano sound, reminiscent of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunter years, would be an interesting addition. In the early stages, I worked on the arrangement with Suno AI. It sounded pretty good, but when I replaced all the AI parts with real musicians, another dimension opened up, and the tune came alive.
