French / German ensemble Thierry Lemaitre Quartet unveils its debut album ´Less Is More´, an ethereal exploration of modern jazz. Comprising four accomplished musicians on saxophone, piano, drums and bass guitar, the group channels the artistry and chemistry of a classic jazz formation through a contemporary lens.

The group is led by Parisian Saxophonist Thierry Lemaître (ephemerals, Wolfgang Valbrun, Biomania), a rising star in independent jazz and soul, whose 2025 project ´System D´ with Biomania earned the coveted FIP Jazz album of the week award. On his new project the quartet takes a more intimate and refined direction, which Lemaitre describes as “intimate, pure and minimalistic.” Recorded live with no overdubs, the album captures a natural acoustic warmth and genuine interplay between the musicians across its nine insightful compositions.

Sonically,´Less Is More´ blends the organic interplay of acoustic jazz with contemporary rhythmic sensibilities. The quartet demonstrates how space, simplicity, and emotional clarity can coexist with virtuosity and improvisation. For Thierry Lemaître, the album represents a milestone, achieving a new level of artistic maturity.

LeMaître shares the primary concept behind the album as: “The idea was to create something naïve and minimalist.”

This approach leaves space for the listener to fully appreciate the harmonies, rhythms and melodies. This essence is evident throughout the record by playing with influences from soul, soundtrack composition, and hip hop, the quartet opens each track with inspired and improvised solos, evoking the spirit of 1960s jazz while maintaining a distinctly modern feeling. This accomplished debut draws inspiration from artists such as Butcher Brown and Makaya McCraven yet beneath this modern sheen lies a deeper lineage which recalls the intimacy and purity of John Coltrane and Bill Evans.

Each piece functions as a “song without words,” with Lemaître’s saxophone assuming the role of the voice, allowing listeners to find their own interpretation. LeMaitre explains his goal to “evoke pure emotion through simplicity, reaching the essence of musical expression.”

The album includes a poetic journey reminiscent of an expressionist painting. With ´Instant T´ (meaning “moment T” in English), evoking the memory of a special moment in life and the passage of time. The track includes luminous piano textures and gentle rhythmic shifts while conjuring watery landscapes and windswept forests. Lemaître’s saxophone floats over the quartet’s subtle interplay, creating a sense of poetic suspension reminiscent of the Bill Evans Trio (You Must Believe in Spring).

The album includes a tribute to soul and hip hop beats, with ´Nostalgia´, which features simple soulful chords and saxophone lines. Lemaitre’s saxophone sings like a voice, phrasing melodies with subtle nuance that evokes the feel of a classic soul singer. Minimalist in its form yet rich in emotional resonance, the track exemplifies the ´Less Is More´ concept.

Perseverance and presence are expressed in´Still Here´, built around four carefully chosen piano chords and a timeless saxophone melody, the composition reflects the spiritual depth of Coltrane’s works (Naima, A Love Supreme). A restrained groove and an uplifting bridge underscore the quartet’s interplay, producing a quietly powerful emotional arc.
