Robert Glasper Releases New Holiday Album “In December” | LISTEN!
Robert Glasper spins a layer of ethereal jazz for In December
If there were a musician who could visualize the Christmas season without the over jazzy trimmings, Robert Glasper pulls off established hymns and intricate originals extending the precious beauty and honest feelings surrounding the holidays. Keeping in tradition with the pianist/composer/arranger’s now classic jazz/neo-soul series Black Radio going back over a decade, Glasper chooses pure vocal talent at his beckoned call.
In December marks Glasper’s debut contributions to the holidays. While all of this 7-track E.P. is admirable, here are a few moments that liven up the winterish atmosphere through Glasper’s Black Radio flair. “Joy to the World” features Alex Isley, whose gentle vocal strokes provide a glowing atmosphere along with Glasper’s pristine piano accompaniment and eloquent arrangements. Another heavenly canvas goes to “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/Carol of the Bells,” thanks to Tony Award winner, Cynthia Erivo. For those who appreciate spoken word, Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball of Tank and the Bangas recalls the importance of mothers during holidays past for “Memories of Mama.”
In December (Lorna Vista Recordings/Concord) is currently available on most digital platforms.
