Nashville-Based Singer Kyshona to Release New Single “The Echo” on March 1st | New Album “Legacy” Arrives April 26th, 2024
On March 1st, Nashville-based powerhouse Kyshona is blessing us with another new single, “The Echo.” Co-written with artist Caroline Spence, it’s the latest from her LP, Legacy, out on April 26th via Soundly Music. “The Echo” was written to honor Kyshona’s grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ commitment to teaching their family the importance of land ownership and seed planting. African-Americans have historically had to fight for the right to even own property, and upon achieving that dream, many had it stripped away for arbitrary reasons.
In preparation for Legacy, Kyshona met with a genealogist at The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History & Culture, tracing five generations, with records dating back to the 1860 US Census Slave Schedules. “I may not know where our tree began or who their names are, but I do know that a small piece of them runs through my veins to this day,” she says.
Legacy houses 13 songs and features guest contributions from Keb Mo’, Ruthie Foster, Odessa Settles, and more, along with songs co-written with Aaron Lee Tasjan, Brittney Spencer, Caroline Spence, and others, including her late grandfather, Hawthorne “H.T.” Armstrong.

Realizing how fragile and fragmented our society is, and as our access to the people and places who shaped us can grow weaker and more distant the older we get, Kyshona crafted this album about legacy to capture the history and honest stories of her ancestors and family so future generations will have something to hold onto. “Maybe tracking my family’s stories into song will be a healing for not only me, but others who feel untethered or isolated, removed from their origins,” she says.” My hope is we can rediscover the past together, and in doing so understand more about ourselves in the future.”
