VOORHEES, N.J. – Mary Cross, a classic soul and jazz singer who has been dubbed the “Mother of Cool Smoke” for her velvety contralto range, has released her first single in two years, “Meet Me on the Moon.”

Featuring trumpet player Will Allen and her band, 2NspireU.

“’Meet Me on the Moon’ pays homage to classic soul as written by Gene McDaniels and Carrie Thompson and celebrates the iconic Phyllis Hyman, whose rendition of the song made it famous,” Cross said. “My hope, whether listening live or to a recording, is to take you back to the days when love was king and nothing else mattered.”

“Meet Me on the Moon” was originally recorded by Hyman 32 years ago and many compare Cross’ vocals to the late singer, as well as others.

“…I hear in her quality vocals such clarity that reminds me of Phyllis (Hyman), Sarah (Vaughan), Nina (Simone), Etta (James) and the songbird Minnie (Riperton), those whom I believe from the heavens give her musical interpretations a decisive endorsement of approval. Yes, Ms. Cross is a real talent, and I am blessed to have the pleasure to enjoy hearing her on this side of glory,” said Orlando Chandler, who is a music lover, fan and childhood friend.

Cross and 2NspireU are slated to release her debut album later in the year.

Cross has immediately identifiable rich contralto vocal tonalities that have been described as sultry, smooth and timeless in both presentation and delivery. She regularly performs before sold-out audiences in venues throughout the Philadelphia tri-state region and beyond.

“Music is the canvas on which I share my thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences with the world.” Cross said. “I’ve fallen in love with music. The creative process, the freedom it provides, its therapeutic ability to heal and its connection to humanity. What I know for sure: I never want to exist without ‘it.’”

Cross’ recording career began with “In Love There’s a Risk” released in 2019, followed by “You Can Change It” in 2020. Her most recent single before “Meet Me on the Moon” was “Promise,” released in 2021. All singles featured classic soul and old school R&B sounds.

“Our ultimate goal is to connect with music lovers by providing memorable and soul-stirring moments 2NspireU,” Cross said.
