Dance floors should be heating up this summer as yet another urban music legend Chaka Khan joins a growing list of soul and R&B favorites (Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson, i.e.) delivering new material in 2018. On her first single since 2008, Khan chocks up the very groove heavy, echoing percussive, deeply sensual, “Like Sugar.” This track from Diary/Universal Records may not be an acquired taste at first for her loyal fans throughout Chaka’s four decade plus span. The even bigger surprise on “Like Sugar” comes with Khan’s fiery contribution on timbales. Overall, while the funk runs deep on “Like Sugar,” her latest single is unquestionably a change of pace for this vocalist who piloted Rufus with their breakthrough hit “Tell Me Something Good.

Of course, Khan’s remarkable solo career with “I’m Every Woman”, along with countless highly charted singles and albums for the R&B and dance markets, will always live on in urban music memory. In the meantime, it is welcoming to embrace the always vivacious Khan as long as she has that funk living inside her soul.
