Prince was the most profoundly voracious and prolific musician across a purple-hued spectrum of styles – a singular melting pot of Soul, Rock, Jazz, Blues and Pop of his own Paisley Funk creation. Beginning by teaching himself to play big band great Neal Hefti’s cool, driving theme to the TV show “Batman” on piano, Prince Rogers Nelson evolved into a wunderkind genius who fluently mastered keyboards, drums, electric bass and – most magnificently – guitar, with a multi-octave vocal range that stretched from his natural hushed speaking baritone to a crystalline falsetto so pure that the Gemini gave it her own name: “Camille.”

On Saturday afternoon November 7, 2015, Locke High School in South Central Los Angeles dedicated its music building to three gentlemen instrumental in making that location the ground zero training workshop for some of L.A.’s finest musical achievers. Those music educators are Don Dustin, Frank Harris and Reggie Andrews. As Master of Ceremonies William Allen Young stated that afternoon, these men instilled within their students, “If you want to be the best, you’ve got to BEAT the best!”

Berklee College of Music has named world-renowned trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and Blue Note recording artist Terence Blanchard as a visiting scholar in the Jazz Composition department beginning in the fall of 2015. Blanchard will also work in the Film Scoring and Brass departments, and for the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.
