Calloway to Release Reboot Version of “Freak-A-Zoid” on March 21st, 2025 | LISTEN!
Report to the dancefloor: R&B/Pop hitmakers Calloway is wound up about the reboot version of “Freak-A-Zoid,” which drops on Friday.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (19 MARCH 2025): When Reggie Calloway produced “Freak-A-Zoid” for his band, Midnight Star, in 1983, he didn’t know that the group’s first hit would become an iconic single that pioneered a new subgenre of R&B music. He concocted space-age electronic beats, a funky techno groove, and synthesized robotic vocals, seeding Techno-Funk and rocketing Midnight Star to the top of the charts. Calloway and his brother, Vincent Calloway, have recreated and re-recorded “Freak-A-Zoid (Reboot)” as their duo, Calloway, with the new version dropping on Friday (March 21) from Spiral Galaxy Entertainment. An animated “Freak-A-Zoid” video illustrated by Cam Calloway (Reggie’s son) will be released on March 28.
The Calloway Brothers and Bill Simmons wrote “Freak-A-Zoid,” and the groundbreaking cut from Midnight Star’s breakthrough “No Parking on the Dance Floor” album still occupies playlists and packs dance floors. The crazy kinetic techno beats spawned a freaky dance, sparked the imagination of countless imitators, and was looped and sampled endlessly by the hip-hop community. With Reggie Calloway architecting the revolutionary track and lyrics and Vincent Calloway inventing the character Zino Zoid to serve as the lead vocals, “Freak-A-Zoid” was decades ahead of its time. In an era when everyone carries a computer in their pocket and cars are driving themselves, rebooting “Freak-A-Zoid” for today’s music scene is timely.
The updated version of “Freak-A-Zoid,” which adds a rap from ImKingCam, is the first rendition recorded and released as their duo Calloway, the brothers who left the platinum-selling Midnight Star in 1986 and formed their own outfit.
“Two new generations have been born since that magical day in 1983 when ‘Freak-A-Zoid’ went to number two on the Billboard R&B singles chart. We want to make sure that they along with future generations can enjoy and experience this trailblazing and trendsetting song. We want everyone to know the history and connection that we have to this song,” said Reggie Calloway, who recently presented the Calloway Experience at the star-studded Vibrato Grill atop Los Angeles.
Last December, Calloway released a 35th anniversary version of their first hit as a duo, “I Wanna Be Rich,” which was remixed by GRAMMY® nominated producer Darius “Phonix” Barnes (J. Cole, The Game, Trey Songz, Eminem, 50 Cent). The original single that went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart was completely retooled by Barnes and the release was accompanied by a new “I Wanna Be Rich” video directed by Ash Gupta.
During their time in the platinum-selling Midnight Star, the Calloway’s scored major hits with “No Parking on the Dance Floor,” “Wet My Whistle,” and “Operator.” The brothers went on to craft hits for Klymaxx (“Meeting in The Ladies Room”), The Deele (“Body Talk”), Levert (“Casanova”), Teddy Pendergrass (“Joy”), Gladys Knight (“Love Overboard”), and Natalie Cole (“Jump Start”). Together, they enjoyed chart success as Calloway with tunes such as “Sir Lancelot,” “You’re My Everything,” “All The Way,” and “Let’s Get Smooth.”
Reggie Calloway is a GRAMMY® nominee who also serves as Director of Music Royalty Funding for Sound Royalties. His acumen as a record executive is part of the reason the Calloway’s are reimagining their own recordings and releasing them on their own label, Spiral Galaxy Entertainment.
“We live in a time when creating and owning your masters is not only creatively rewarding, but also smart business. With this new version of ‘Freak-A-Zoid,’ we can make it more accessible to radio by making it shorter, punchier, and utilizing the innovative technologies and sounds. Just as important, we can now make the recording available for licensing for television, film, commercials, video games, and endorsements,” explained Reggie Calloway, who will perform with Vincent Calloway at the Unbridled Eve Derby Gala on May 2, the night before the Kentucky Derby.
The duo Calloway also plans to release new music, which will begin this spring with the release of “6 Pack,” a single promoting health and wellness. It’s a message that is especially important to Vincent Calloway, who practices and teaches martial arts.
“I’ve been a fitness ‘Freak-A-Zoid’ for decades. As fun as our music has always been on the surface, our songs have had deeper meaning. ‘6 Pack’ has that,” said Vincent Calloway, who then returned focus to the updated version of “Freak-A-Zoid.”
“It was a joy and an honor to bring back to the forefront the character and the sound I created with Zino Zoid. It was amazing how the youth took to it and made ‘Freak-A-Zoid’ a household word and a dance craze.”
