North West London-based rising singer-songwriter Essence Martins continues to craft a sound that is distinctly her own, drawing inspiration from a blend of indie, folk, pop, and soul. As she prepares to release her sophomore EP this spring, she shares her new single, “Garden of Eden,” along with a video directed by Henry Croston.
On “Garden of Eden,” Essence Martins’ delicate vocals reflect on the feeling of making mistakes and wanting to hit reset and start again, accompanied by soothing instrumentation. She explains “Garden of Eden is about yearning for the idyllic, a clean slate, an easy ride without all the difficult, ugly things that make life so beautiful. It’s normal to want this, but not realistic, and the ‘Garden of Eden,’ in this case, is a metaphor for an idyllic, perfect world. The song asks the question, ‘Can I go back to start over again?’ and the answer is, of course, ‘No,’ which leaves the song and EP on a cliffhanger: What do we do now? And, of course, the answer is to keep going.”
“Garden of Eden” is the fourth single to be taken from the EP, following the previous singles “Quiet and Perfect”, “Salvation’s Forgotten Us” and “Mrs. Right”, which got the seal of approval from Jill Scott.
Essence Martin’s upbringing was steeped in sport, specifically tennis, practicing and competing in tournaments. At 17, she took to YouTube tutorials to learn the guitar and piano, as a way to escape the pressures of constant training and competing. Despite dedicating her childhood to tennis training, Essence’s journey led her to pursue her true passion in music. After a year of studying Sports Science and Biology in the US on a tennis scholarship, she made the life-altering decision to follow her heart and pursue music. Growing up listening to a diverse range of artists, from Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill to Simon and Garfunkel, and later discovering the likes of Paramore and Phoebe Bridgers, she began to define her sound.
Essence’s 2024 debut EP “Deer In The Headlights” has collectively amassed over 600,000 streams, earning editorial support on Spotify and Tidal. Her debut single “Pending Status” secured radio support from BBC Radio 1, Radio X, and BBC Introducing. Essence has toured and performed as a backing vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist for the acclaimed artist Birdy, and also supported both Rachel Chinouriri and Mika at their London headline shows. Most recently, she collaborated with indie soul artist BINA. On her new EP “Chaos In Her Name”. Essence is set to perform at London’s Cross The Tracks festival this summer, with more live dates to be confirmed this year.
