Kandace Springs Releases New Single “Chasing Shadows”

Track Is From Her New Album, Run Your Race

Kandace Springs’ sultry new single, “Chasing Shadows,” is out now. The song is from her critically acclaimed new album, Run Your Race (SRP Records).

“It’s actually the first song I wrote with Evan and Carl, right after we met,” says Kandace Springs, referring to Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, her long-time collaborators, and a writing session that occurred almost 10 years ago. “We just hit on this groove right away, it was magical. I can’t believe it’s taken this long to finally get heard!”

“Chasing Shadows,” with its distinctly retro, Sade-like feel, shimmering electric piano, and sensuous, airy vocals, embodies many elements of what came to define Kandace’s signature sound over the next several years.

“I’m usually called a jazz artist, but I honestly grew up with just as much R&B in the house,” she explains. “So I keep going back and forth between the two. And sometimes I’m happiest when I’ve got a foot in both worlds at the same time. And that’s what this song is.”

Also featured on “Chasing Shadows” and putting the sultriness on steroids, is flutist Elena Pinderhughes, a long-time friend and one of jazz’s rising stars. Springs recalls, “Elena played on my last album, The Women Who Raised Me, and just killed it. You hear that sound and just go, wow! It’s pure beauty. Once I heard her on it, I could never imagine the song without her. I think I will have to have her play on every album I do!”

Why did this gem take so long to see the light of day? Kandace says that, like many things in her life, it’s a matter of timing. “My first EP had a bit of a hip hop feel. Then my first album was more of an acoustic jazz flavor. So it kept getting left out of the party. But I think I’m finally comfortable putting all my different styles together in one place on this new album. So, it’s finally time for ‘Chasing Shadows’ to shine!”
