Singer Dessy Di Lauro to Release New Album, “This Is Neo-Ragtime” in Feb./Black History Month
She has had feature roles on Cirque du Soleil and sang background vocals for the likes of Patti Labelle, Deborah Cox, & The Neville Bros. He has toured with Madonna, written and performed on Jill Scott’s new album, The Light of The Sun. Now Dessy Di Lauro and her producer/husband Ric’key Pageot are ready to take the music world by storm with their neo-ragtime sound.
Montreal born, L.A.-based, Dessy Di Lauro (pronounced D’Laro) delivers a unique flavor of original music she describes as ”Feathered Fro-hawk Futuristic Art Deco-Centric Harlem Renaissance Hep Music,” which blends the ragtime’s musical language of the speakeasy era with today’s contemporary urban sounds.
This February Black History Month, Dessy Di Lauro is releasing her first full-length album of her original music entitled, ‘This Is Neo-Ragtime’ along with her new music video, Jump N’ Jivin’.
Di Lauro says: ‘I feel like it is the perfect month of the year to release this album because I want to celebrate the importance of Ragtime music in Black history with everyone. Back then, almost a century ago, this genre was at the top of the pop charts and I want to revive that again.
The album features an urban sound with stride piano, live horns, along with electronic/urban overtones with resonating keyboard bass and thumping drum machines sounds and catchy hooks. Dessy’s lyrical subject matters range from challenges of today’s artists dealing with social media’s heavy influence on the music industry, on her song ‘Popularity Contest’, to ending an abusive relationship on ‘Never Existed’ to simply having a good time at the juke joint party on ‘Jump ‘N’ Jivin’.
Dessy Di Lauro is a seasoned performer and recording artist with features in platinum certified album sales in Canada amd Europe with recording artists such as Sky, Dubmatique and Corneille. She has also performed in arenas all over the world, having feature roles in two original Cirque du Soleil casts; La Nouba and Delirium Arena tour. She has also been featured on nearly a dozen of the company’s soundtracks and compilations.
Her producer and husband also brings his urban/jazz influence into the mix with his bachelor degree in music, majoring in jazz performance from Montreal’s McGill University (2003). Since, he has toured with Cirque du Soleil’s Delirium Arena Tour as musical director and with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, on her last two world tours, Sticky & Sweet (2008-09) and MDNA (2012) as keyboardist, pianist and accordionist.
In 2004, together, Di Lauro and Pageot founded the CrazyglueMusic imprint and released their critically acclaimed first EP ‘A Study of A Woman’s Soul’ which consisted of soul/brazilian infused tracks.
