Introducing Bobbie Gordon and “Matters Of The Heart” – New EP Coming Nov. 14th, 2011
Bobbie Gordon could be just the next big thing to come out of the UK to take the world by storm. Young, vibrant and adept at writing a melodic tune or ten with the sort of wit and panache of a future master. Bobbie’s unique voice is infectious and has seen her go from the little girl who used to watch her mum on stage singing with Maxi Priest and other chart topping artists of the day to touring and performing with today’s biggest names including Adele, Noisettes, Cee-Lo Green, Kele and Skepta.
Her debut EP ‘Matters Of The Heart’ out November 14th offers a fresh, intimate folk-pop sound with a heavy dash of soul. Upon moving in with her band she wrote and recorded Matters of the Heart at home, and started to film her online fortnightly Turnpike Sessions,
featuring collaborations with Shinghai Shoniwa (Noisettes), Aloosh,
Zarif and a great list of other talented industry friends booked in to
perform for the rest of the year. This is her own version of the
successful Live From Daryl’s House, Bobbie Gordon style.
Bobbie offers a beautiful representation of modern London in the ilk of Lily Allen and Adele et al but with a soulful disposition above and beyond which has led her to gain praise and comparisons to Corrine Bailey Rae, Minnie Riperton, Neneh Cherry and Joan Armatrading. Bobbie is definitely a one of a kind though. She makes and adapts all her own clothes, dressing for a recent gig in head-to-thigh flowers and declaring a penchant for African print and colourful accessories.
Mastered at the legendary Sarm Studios (Led Zeppelin, UB40, The Prodigy) Bobbie’s debut Matters Of The Heart EP opens on a wistful note, evoking the summer comedown of spring romance. Over an upbeat instrumental, driven down by a jaunty brushed drum beat and half-time acoustic guitar, Bobbie faces the realities of “Matters of the Heart” with a musing lilt in her voice, homegrown country soul is what this is all about. Lead track “Better” is Bobbie’s mission statement. This slick and funky anthem of self-improvement sees her striving for the next level, even if her partner may not appreciate it. With a B-line to make anyone shake it like a Polaroid picture, this song could be enormous. “Fallen From Grace” closes the EP perfectly. It is a bittersweet folk ballad, with Gordon taking a moment to mourn a lost relationship that she still cherishes. Yet, with a string section and cooing chorus of backing vocals elevating a downplayed acoustic guitar melody, Gordon seems to chalk it all up to life experience rather than a mere source of regret.
Having already collaborated and performed with some of the biggest names in the biz many up-and-coming producers have recruited Bobbie’s vocal talents, including trance influenced dubstep duo NFIFTYFIVE on their anthemic “Bring On The Night“. Lancaster duo Bondax utilized her talents to add a soulful current to their cinematic downtempo cut “Just Smile For Me” and UK Bass wunderkid Last Japan also featured Gordon on the title cut of his Settle Down EP. In turn, a half-dozen other rising stars have remixed all of the aforementioned tracks for official releases.
