Directed and written by Tyler Perry (Diary Of A Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, Why Did I Get Married?), FOR COLORED GIRLS stars Academy Award-winner Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple, Sister Act), Janet Jackson (Nutty Professor II, Why Did I Get Married?), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), Thandie Newton (Crash, The Pursuit of Happiness), Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show, Uncle Tom’s Cabin), Loretta Devine (The Preacher’s Wife, Crash), Kerry Washington (Save The Last Dance, Ray), and Kimberly Elise (John Q, The Great Debaters).
FOR COLORED GIRLS — the film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s1975 Obie Award-winning play, FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF — is a unique collection of poems illustrating the power of women of color to survive in the face of pain and despair. The many stories of struggle told within the film’s choreo poem reflect women’s ongoing battle with love, abandonment and the finding of self — among the tales told are those of a woman who chooses to have an abortion, a woman who has fallen victim to domestic violence and a woman who embraces life by running away with the man she loves.
