Saxophonist Michael Lington to Release New EP “On The Scene” on Feb. 28th, 2025 | WATCH VIDEO! Announces New Tour for 2025
MICHAEL LINGTON’S NEW EP, ON THE SCENE, SET FOR FEBRUARY 28 RELEASE
Lead Single “On The Scene” Keeps The Party Going Following Success Of “South Bay,” One Of The Longest-Running No. 1 Hits On Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Airplay Chart
Fresh off his No. 1 hit “South Bay,” which made history as one of the longest running No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Airplay chart with seven weeks atop the tally, Michael Lington returns with his new EP, On The Scene. Set for February 28 release on Copenhagen Music, the EP is available for pre-save / pre-order HERE. See below for track listing.
The bright, optimistic spirit and vibrant energy of On the Scene captures the ongoing joy and whirlwind bustle of a new phase in his life, where Lington became a family man at 50, marrying his wife Keri, becoming a stepdad to her young daughter Lauren and then a first-time dad with the birth of their son Landon.
The concept of On the Scene and its vivacious, party-ready title track and lead single is that “we’re fully invested in the present moment and big things are happening,” explains Michael Lington. The single is a fresh and fiery, brass-splashed jam designed to reflect the spirit of the iconic collaborations between Marcus Miller and the late David Sanborn. Co-produced by Lington with veteran saxman and horn arranger David Mann, the song features the same powerhouse band that brought the magic to the saxophonist’s recent Billboard Top 5 hit/#1 Radiowave hit “Moon Goddess.”
Lington and Mann also co-produced a track with an even more direct tie to the Miller/Sanborn aesthetic – a passionate, alternately silky and soaring re-imagining of “Goodbye,” a lesser-known cut from Sanborn’s classic 1988 album Close Up. In separate conversations Lington had with Miller and Sanborn, neither remembered the 35+ year old song but they gave him their blessing to record it. Lington has also performed the tune regularly as a tribute to Sanborn, one of his greatest influences who passed away in May 2024.
Two-time GRAMMY®-winning producer Paul Brown, a frequent collaborator of Lington’s, co-wrote, mixed, produced and brought top musicians from his Funky Joint crew to the EP’s remaining three tracks: the exuberant, funkified and brass-fired “Just Sayin’,” the jangly, playfully thumping opener “Dreamy Night” and the sensual, blues and R&B-tinged ballad “Hold Me Tight.” The latter two feature Shane Theriot (a longtime member of Daryl Hall’s band) on guitars, bass, keys and drum programming.
“I’m gratified, of course, by the chart success of songs like ‘South Bay,’ but I see my career through a different set of lenses compared to earlier in my career,” says Lington. “It’s not about numbers or making every note perfect, but about moving people and touching their lives with music I love both creating and listening to. If you check out my albums and EPs and come to my live show, I want you to feel better than you did before that experience.”
On The Scene marks Lington’s 14th album. He has charted more than 25 hit singles and performed in over 40 countries. He will once again be touring the globe in 2025. He’ll perform at the sold-out Jam For LA – an all-star benefit for fire disaster relief hosted by Michael Paulo and Dave Koz – on February 23 at South Coast Winery Resort & Spa in Temecula, CA. He’s also bringing his Sax To Soul Special Guest Concert series back to Spaghettini in Seal Beach, CA with a line-up this year that includes Boney James, Ruben Studdard, Kandace Springs and Kenny Lattimore. The 2024 Sax To Soul concert series was completely sold out. See below for itinerary. Tickets are available https://michaellington.com/tour/.
