About Anthony Hamilton
Since debuting onto the music scene at the very beginning of the 90s, Anthony Hamilton has become one of R&B’s most distinctive voices. Hamilton was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, singing in his church choir at age 10, which built the framework for his now powerful soul-stirring performances.
Hamilton’s Musical Journey and Breakthrough
Anthony Hamilton started his musical stardom out of Charlotte, North Carolina, while he was barbering and perfecting his vocals. Known as “the singing barber,” Hamilton would often serenade customers at Mangum’s barbershop on West Boulevard.
Hamilton never had it easy. That much is clear. He then spent much of the 1990s trying to break into the music industry, participating in talent shows and showcases in Charlotte before heading out to New York. But Hamilton battled on, even after three failed record deals. After years of performing as a backup singer for D’Angelo, his breakthrough came in 2003 when he signed with Jermaine Dupri‘s So So Def Records, leading to the release of his critically acclaimed album Comin’ from Where I’m From. This album, featuring the hit single “Charlene,” marked the beginning of Hamilton’s rise to prominence in the R&B world.
Achievements and Recognition
He has also won a Grammy Award from 12 nominations. Some of Hamilton’s notable achievements include:
- A Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance
- Nominated multiple times for a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance and Best Gospel Performance/Song.
- BET “Cool Like That” Award in 2006
- Performer at the White House in 2016, honoring Ray Charles
- Collaborations on chart-topping albums, such as Nas‘ “Life Is Good,” which reached #1 on the Billboard 200
Soulful Sound?
Anthony Hamilton’s musical style is soul and R&B-heavy style with a great mix of gospel, blues, and a touch of contemporary. But his rich, gritty voice and emotive delivery have caused comparisons to the likes of Sam Cooke and Al Green.
Hamilton’s lyrics tend to be inextricably linked to his life—love, heartbreak, current events, etc. Neo-soul, retro-soul: That’s his approach to music, and it sounds fresh and timeless.
Speaking of timelessness, Anthony also has six sons with a wide age range of 11 to 35 years old, and more recently on the Jennifer Hudson Show mentioned his sons are all musically inclined. Some are into techno & trance, others into music theatre and others into video games.

Recent Projects and Future Plans for 2024 – 2025
His latest album, Love Is The New Black (2021), which was created during the pandemic, received critical acclaim and earned him the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Male Artist in 2022. The album includes collaborations with Jennifer Hudson and activist Tamika D. Mallory. Themes from that dark time — especially racial tension and finding a renewed appreciation for life and love — befit the album.
Hamilton is always working on new music. He recently released the song “Queen”, which he described as an ode to all the Queens that he was raised by.
Additionally, Hamilton has expanded his artistic ventures way beyond music:
- Launched a line of hot sauces and published a cookbook, “Cornbread Fish’n Collard Greens”. He also opened a new online store, called “Hamilton’s Corner Store” where Southern staples like grits, cornbread and biscuits are for sale.
- Continuing to explore opportunities in film and television, following his appearance in “American Gangster”
- Planning to perform more frequently on international tours and playing in London specifically
As for 2025, Anthony Hamilton is scheduled to perform at Maxwell’s Valentine’s 2025 Urban Hang Suite Cruise. The cruise will also feature performances by Marsha Ambrosius, Lalah Hathaway, and Avery*Sunshine.
