DETROIT – Jan. 10, 2019 – PRLog — At the age of 19, Drew Schultz entered the music industry as the touring drummer with Motown legends, the Four Tops. He has performed on stage with artists including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Gladys Knight, The Miracles, Dramatics, Contours, Jerry Butler, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, and many more. Drew’s “Back To Class” project is a series of his own original songs and recordings with 50% of profits benefiting Detroit Public School music programs featuring artists including the Four Tops, members of The Funk Brothers, Melvin Davis, Spyder Turner, Pat Lewis, Dennis Coffey, Lenny Pickett of Tower of Power / SNL, Chairmen of the Board, James Jamerson Jr., Reginald Torian of The Impressions, and many more. As a Pre-Production Engineer for Universal/Motown Records, he has credits on projects by Michael Jackson / The Jackson 5, David Ruffin & Jimmy Ruffin, and the Cellarful of Motown series. His audio production has led to work with Questlove of the Roots during a New York University “Classic Albums” college course, and Maurice White of Earth, Wind, & Fire. He is a published contributor to Modern Drummer Magazine, a Program Manager at the Motown Museum and a college professor of drums, songwriting, and music industry studies at the Detroit Institute of Music Education.

Recorded on stage in 2018, Drew Schultz & The Broken Habits – Live at 20 Front Street celebrates many of Schultz’s heroes. The album is a combination of songs Drew has written for his “Back To Class” series as well as live renditions of the classic hits by the legends that Schultz has worked with. Interspersed within the music are stories told about Schultz’s career and some of the lessons learned from his idols and mentors. The concert was recorded in front of a sold out crowd at 20 Front Street in Lake Orion, MI. The venue is an award winning intimate concert space that has been voted as one of the top Listening Rooms in the country hosting winners of the Voice, American Idol, and Grammy winning artists just in its first two years.

The music on this live record is a combination of the hook-oriented songwriting that Schultz strives to create, blended with improvisational solos. In the spirit of the jazz players who influenced Motown’s own Funk Brothers backing band, Drew Schultz & The Broken Habits deftly move through multiple genres and switch between tight grooves and exploratory instrumental improv sections. The Broken Habits consist of some of the Motor City’s finest musicians. Lead vocalist Trish Shandor is an award winning singer and educator who has performed with Gloria Estefan and toured with Ben Folds, while singing in countless groups that cover the spectrum of jazz, pop, classical, broadway, and opera. She has been an artist in residence at the Michigan Opera Theater, worked at the Detroit Opera House, and teaches at Michigan State University’s Community Music School. Guitarist Carlton Washington is a graduate of Berklee College of Music who has been touring the world with Detroit’s Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis, as well as performing with icons including Larry McCray and Ian Siegal. He brings a blues sensibility to the Motown and Soul Music performed by the Broken Habits. Bassist Matt Ryan comes from a musical family, and brings his virtuosic improvisation to the group’s jazz/soul sound. Matt’s background as a marching drummer and drum line instructor lend his bass playing a wide rhythmic vocabulary. Keyboardist Mike Harrison is steeped in jazz and classic R&B, and gigs consistently in the Detroit area with groups including his own outfit, Strictly Fine. His versatility on guitar, bass, and vocals allows him to make musical choices that compliment every instrument while also offering inventive solo sections.
