CANON U.S.A. Launches New Printer Feat. Herbie Hancock
FEATURING ICONIC RECORDING ARTIST HERBIE HANCOCK
Special Live Performance by Herbie Hancock Generates a First-of-its-Kind, Print-Inspired, “Crowd-Sourced” Music Video for his classic song, “Chameleon”
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 27, 2011—Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, collaborated with Herbie Hancock, a legendary recording artist, bandleader and icon of modern music, to launch the Canon PIXMA PRO-1 Professional Inkjet Printer on Wednesday, October 26th at Skylight West in Manhattan. The “Canon Legends in Imaging” event featured a performance by the 14-time Grammy® Award winner, who was the inspiration for a first-of-its-kind music video to be created from crowd-sourced images.
The PIXMA PRO-1 Printer features a completely new ink system to help professionals achieve gallery-quality results. This new system features 12 inks, which help to increase the color gamut when compared to other similar models currently in the market. Additionally, skin-tone reproduction has been improved to provide a more natural look when printing portraits.
To showcase the precision of the newly unveiled printer, Canon invited guests to participate in the creation of a print-inspired music video for Hancock’s classic song “Chameleon.” Selected attendees photographed Hancock’s live performance using Canon EOS 5D MKII cameras. Their photographs will be printed using Canon’s PIXMA PRO-1 Printer and then edited and synched with a live audio recording to create a stop-motion-style music video scheduled to be released in early December.
“The collaboration with Canon U.S.A for the launch of its PIXMA PRO-1 Printer combines my appreciation for technology with my passion for collaboration across genres and media—in this case music and photography,” said Hancock. “A new imaging product, like a musical performance, provides the opportunity to embrace creative freedom and reflect art in an unprecedented way.”
“Mr. Hancock is a pioneer who adopts new technologies and constantly reinvents the way music is performed,” said Kasuichi Shimizu, managing director, member of board chief executive inkjet products operations, Canon Inc. “His willingness to follow the music where it takes him is what led us to this partnership and creation of the stop-motion music video. We’re honored to have aligned with such an innovator, and we hope to work together on the launch of future Canon products.”
The “Legends in Imaging” event also included a presentation about new product development by Canon executives and an art gallery installation featuring printed photographs of Hancock and other legendary musicians shot by renowned Canon Explorer of Light photographer, Vincent Isola.
