Sax Great Clarence Clemons Passes…
By Susan Mutharia | T.U.M.S.
On an interview with the Rolling Stone magazine, Clarence Clemons once said “I call the stage the healing floor. Whatever is wrong with you once you get on that stage is fine until you get off the stage. The mind is a very strong thing.” This is a piece of truth we shall always remember of Clemons for every time he played his saxophone on stage, it was not just a song, it was a conversation.
Today we mourn the death of the great saxophone player Clarence Clemons who died on June 18th, one week after suffering a stroke. He was 69 years old. Clemons who was known as ‘Big Man’ for his 6feet 5inches body frame was an original member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and jammed with them for 40 years. Some of the most memorable solos with the band are ‘Jungleland’ and ‘Born To Run’. Apart from the E Street Band, Clemons had also performed alongside other music greats including Aretha Franklin, Grateful Dead and most recently, Lady Gaga on the American Idol finale stage.
The chemistry that ‘Big Man’ shared with the ‘The Boss’ Springsteen and the band on stage will be missed and as Springsteen said, “His loss is immeasurable”.
The TUMS family joins the band of brothers, his family, friends and fans in celebrating the life and legacy of Clarence Clemons. His sax conversations may no longer be heard live on earth but will linger in our memories and hearts.
