G.I. Disco: The History of the Cold Wars Hottest 80s Club Music in West Germany by Kalle Kuts & Daniel W. Best | Coming Oct. 4th, 2010

Berlin local DJ heroes Kalle Kuts and Daniel W. Best a.k.a. G.I.DISCO have compiled an excellent 80s Soul, Funk, R & B and Disco selection. Soul, Funk and R&B from the US became a worldwide dance and clubbing movement during the 70s when it turned “disco”.Although a global success story, it played an interesting role especially in the German experience.

The American G.I.s stationed in West-Germany during the Cold War, brought this music with them. Equally responsible were the radio station AFN (American Forces Network), as well as clubs within the vicinity of the army-barracks in such cities as Berlin (West), Frankfurt am Main, Rammstein, Stuttgart or Heidelberg. Although there was no further intention than to just offer some entertainment to the US troops , there was a strong appeal to the local people as well: AFN´s top 40 show format and the style of their DJs was a so far completely unknown radio concept to the German listeners, and the ! Soul, Funk & Disco records that army DJs like Steve Kastelacor The Magnificent Magoo played on their shows where simply the freshest sound around…

Not only the story behind the compilation is a special one, but also the artwork is outstanding: The portraits of the G.I.s on the cover were taken by the famous photographer Frank Thiel ( http://www.skny.com/artists/frank-thiel/). His G.I. portraits are displayed at the Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin as well as in Sean Kelly Gallery in New York.

Being entertaining and educating at the same time, this is far more than just another “Disco Classics” sampler. Available as CD, collectible double vinyl and download.
