Movie Premiere of “Jazz in the Diamond District”

Soblu Inc.’s debut feature film, “Jazz in the Diamond District,” will
open in select theaters in D.C., New York, Atlanta and Chicago for
exclusive one-week engagements through Landmark Theatres. The film will
open in Washington, D.C. on April 24th and will close in Chicago, IL on
May 21st. In addition, there will be a premiere held in Los Angeles at
the Arclight Cinema on May 5th.
”Jazz in the Diamond District”
is a 79-minute urban drama that stars “The Wire’s,” Wood Harris and
D.C.’s own, Clifton Powell, and chronicles the summer of Jasmine “Jazz”
Morgan, a young singer who attempts to navigate the complexities of the
music industry on her quest to become a star. The film is set against
the backdrop of D.C.’s vibrant underground music culture and features
an electrifying score that includes musical genres ranging from Hip-Hop
to R&B to Go-go, a sub-genre of Funk that was originated and
nurtured in Washington, D.C.

Harris stars in the film as Gabriel Marx, the manager of a popular D.C.
go-go band, while Clifton Powell play’s Jazz’s father, a strict doctor
who does not approve of Jazz’s decision to leave college and return
home to pursue singing. “Jazz in the Diamond District” also marks the
big-screen debut of native Washingtonians, Monique Cameron (as Jazz),
Erica Chamblee, and Andre’ Strong – all graduates of D.C.’s prestigious
arts high school, Duke Ellington – and was co-edited by Academy Award
nominee, Daniel Rezende (nominated in 2004 for his work as the editor
of the highly-acclaimed Brazilian film, City of God (2002)). In
addition to being selected for the 2008 DC International Film Festival,
the film was also an official selection for the 2008 Urbanworld Film
Festival.
The first single from the film’s soundtrack, “Red
Carpet,” performed by D.C.’s premiere hip-hop group, Likeblood, is
impacting radio across the country. In addition, the music video, which
was shot in mid-February, premiered on BET.com in March and is slated
to make its television debut this month. Both the films’ score and
soundtrack are co-produced by Chucky Thompson and up-and-coming
producer, Maurice “Mo Digga” Randolph, and feature a variety of D.C.
artists including Likeblood, the UnCalled 4 Experience, MTB4’s DeAngelo
Redman, Tabi Bonney, and up-and-coming chanteuse, Chris. Select
premieres will be followed by a concert featuring performances by
artists from the soundtrack.
