Bassist/vocalist/composer Esperanza Spalding’s Heads Up debut, Esperanza (HUCD 3140), was released on May 20, 2008. Armed with uncanny instrumental chops, a siren voice that spans three languages, and composing and arranging skills that weave together the best elements of the old-school with the progressive, this 23-year-old has crafted a debut album that takes a completely fresh and refreshing approach to jazz by borrowing from the rich traditions of soul, pop, world music and so much more.
A cappella powerhouse Take 6 marked a new vocal milestone with the September 30, 2008, release of The Standard (HUCD 3142). Winners of 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and now three NAACP Image Award nominations, the influential sextet – Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Dr. Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea and Joey Kibble – made their debut on Heads Up with a recording of mostly jazz (and some R& standards that featured such high-profile guests as Aaron Neville, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Jon Hendricks, Till Brönner and Brian McKnight.
