Drummer Pat Petrillo has had a busy career playing with a variety of artists such as Patti LaBelle, Gloria Gaynor, Oz Noy, recorded with Nile Rodgers, and has performed on numerous Broadway shows (“A Chorus Line,” “Grease,” “Footloose,” “Newsies”). On his latest release, Contemporaneous, he blends together all of those influences and inspirations to create new music filled with melodic hooks, is creatively funky, yet also filled with its share of musical complexity and virtuosity.
From the first note of this genre-defying musical montage, it’s evident that many musical styles can coexist within the same time and space continuum, especially when they all originate from the same soul. Pat Petrillo entices the listener to experience an uncompromising variety of 11 contemporary instrumental gems, with unpredictable musical twists waiting with each passing track. His drumming is assertive and inventive on the high energy Jazz/Rock track “Fused”, while “Late Night Diner” takes a Shuffle down 8th Ave in New York City. “On the Regular” brings the Funk. “Summer in Philly” is a smooth, Neo Soul track and “Grizzle” adds a pinch of New Orleans flavor to the mix. The ideas flow from a variety of musical places. While Pat cites the inspiration of the Brecker Brothers and Snarky Puppy among others for his genre-blending music, in reality the melodies and grooves on Contemporaneous are very much his own. “You can’t come from somewhere unless you’ve been there, musically speaking,” Petrillo states. “It’s important to create music from a place of honesty and conviction. I am what I’ve listened to and studied all my life. All this musical variety is embedded in my DNA, and I try to bring all that influence into my music now, Contemporaneously.”
The album includes top NYC and LA players Oz Noy, Chieli Minucci and Blake Aaron on Guitar, Chris Fischer (Spyro Gyra) and Matt Rohde (NBC’s “The Voice”) on keyboards, while Gary Grainger (John Scofield, Acoustic Alchemy) and Scott Ambush (Spyro Gyra) share bass duties. The horn section features Steve Jankowski (Chic) and Mike Cordone (Camila Cabello, Usher) on trumpets, Lemar Guillary on Trombone. Scott Mayo (Sergio Mendes, John Legend), Tom Timko (Gloria Estefan), Phillip Wack (Simon Phillips Protocol) and Will Donato are on saxes. The versatile album has already had chart success with “Glide in My Stride”, “Weekend Vibe” and “Summer in Philly,” all placing on the Billboard Smooth Jazz charts.
