Rufus and Chaka Khan to Reissue Final 2 Recordings “Stompin’ at the Savoy” & “Seal in Red” on 2 CD’s – March 14th, 2025
Rufus and Chaka Khan return in a reissue of their final two recordings, Stompin’ at the Savoy and Seal in Red
1983 marked the swan song for Rufus, who scored one platinum and several gold albums while launching the career of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chaka Khan. For over one decade, even through the offstage tribulations, the Chicago-based ensemble influenced the funk scene during the 70’s and 80’s, earning a respectable Billboard chart history scoring in the top 50 for all their 11 albums, while consistently crossing over to the pop charts, sometimes without Chaka.
In celebrating that pivotal year of 1983, U.K. label Robinsongs reissues Rufus’ last studio album, Seal in Red and their last reunion with Chaka Khan on Stompin’ at The Savoy – Live. On the greatest hits live extravaganza, Stompin’ at the Savoy, serves up “Tell Me Something Good” and “Do You Love What You Feel” and more. Besides the three concert sides, a fourth side in the recording studio featured one of the two bonus tracks – “Ain’t Nobody” – which turned out to be the cream of the crop in their signature songs catalog.
On Seal in Red, guitarist Tony Maiden, keyboardists Kevin Murphy and David “Hawk” Wolinski, bassist Bobby Watson, and drummer John “J.R.” Robinson brought in prolific talent such as vocalists Ivan Neville and Patti Austin under the production of urban music icon, George Duke. The lone single, “Take It to The Top” secured a Top 50 chart placing.
The reissue of Stompin’ at the Savoy and Seal in Red comes out as a 2 CD set on March 14.
