Danny Boy, the incomparable tenor who sang the hooks on 2Pac Shakur classics such as platinum gems, “I Ain’t Mad at Cha” and “Picture Me Rollin’,” is back. The erstwhile Suge Knight protégé and Death Row artist has weathered a decade’s worth of personal and professional storms to re-emerge with a catchy new R&B track. The Chi Town native has teamed up with producer Fred “Toxic” Taylor (Keyshia Cole, Diddy) and composer, Bryson Dorris (Tweet, Twista), for the sensual, feel-good Chicago-styled Stepper’s groove, “This Song”(Chicago Creed).
On it, Danny Boy passionately croons, “This song is for moving, this song is for grooving, this song is for making some real good love to you.” Throughout the romantic track, which sits atop a catchy fusion of swaying swing beats, the crooner’s voice effortlessly glides between sultry bass growls and smooth high notes. It’s a future classic that deserves a place among the court of new grooves by R&B’s reigning princes such as Giveon, Pink Sweat$, and Lucky Daye.
“This song reminds me of the `90s and a time when things were so good,” Danny Boy says. “When partying was amazing like block club parties, basement parties, and family parties. The lyrics exude partying; but with a peaceful, come togetherness….something that’s missing with today’s R&B. `This Song’ resonates with me because it matches my movement as the Preacher of R&B. It evokes what’s been missing in R&B and takes me and the listener to so many great places.”
Danny Boy got his start as a teenager with Death Row Records back in the 1990s. As a soloist, he hit Billboard’s R&B charts with “Slip N Slide” and “It’s Over Now.” Concurrently, he performed on tracks by Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Twista; but found the greatest success with 2Pac. Fans will be glad to know that Danny Boy has a full album entitled, Black Heart (Chicago Creed), set to release in February 2023. “Incredible lyrics, incredible songs,” the singer says. “It takes you back to old school R&B where the lyrics make you see the songs, songs that are relatable. It’s a relationship healer. It’s not just love songs and good moments, but the other stuff and how I got through those moments. These songs let you experience my heart.”
Danny Boy is full of heart. Whether it’s cooking at his eatery, Oh Danny Boy’s on Western Avenue in Chicago, or catching up with his three children; he’s always busy. “That’s hard to say because I’m such a maverick,” he adds when asked what a typical day is like for him. “I’m a person who lives on the edge. Everyday it’s something different but at the end of the day, my focus is music… It’s infused into everything I am and do. I’m an entrepreneur who is always working towards building my brand and businesses but it’s always pointing back to music as my core. I’m a thinker… I’m always thinking and trying to be in a creative space but always on a daily grind.”
