New Video From Daptone Records’ Saun & Starr –‘Big Wheel’
Track Appears On Forthcoming Debut LP Look Closer Out May 18th
Daptone’s newest addition to their illustrious stable of artists, Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe, known as Saun & Starr, have released a new video for their song ‘Big Wheel’. The track is featured on the duo’s debut full-length Look Closer coming out on the 18th of May via Daptone Records. You may also recognize them as the long-time soulful backing singers for Grammy-nominated Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.
In anticipation of Look Closer’s release Saun & Starr, along with the Dap-Kings, will perform songs from the album at Rough Trade NYC for Record Store Day on April 18.
‘Big Wheel’ was filmed with an indelible indie spirit, entirely on a Samsung s5 phone by director Wayne Gordon, at Daptone label head Gabriel Roth’s Riverside, CA home and nearby Castle Amusement Park.
Gordon says of the video, “To understand the vision of the film, one must understand the modus operandi of Daptone Records. To spend time creating things we love, with the people we love, for the people who love it. Simple as that.”
Gabriel, Roth, who also served as producer of Look Closer, concurs, adding, “When Wayne first brought me his concept for this video, I must admit I was sceptical as to whether it was something we could pull off. However, his ambition and vision were so inspired that I too soon felt unstoppable. It was my challenge to try to make possible all these amazing shots he had in his mind’s eye. We spent a lot of energy just figuring out how we would be able to pull these shots off with only my telephone. We came up with some great ideas. Simply drawing a circle as a guide on the screen of my phone enabled us to keep the wheel concept on track through the video. We built a crazy rotating bracket in my basement and rigged it to a mic stand that enabled us to get the shot of them spinning on the floor. We used backwards shots, jump cuts, even stuntmen! It was a lot of fun to make and felt good to finally have a video that had the same hand-made, family feeling as the music we make.”
Current single is ‘Hot Shot’ with a B Side of ‘Look Closer’ radio impact date is April 27th.
